Confirmed: Formula One Veteran’s NASCAR Debut

What’s Happening?

Formula One veteran Kevin Magnussen will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut later this month in the inaugural street race at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado.

• The 33-year-old Dane will drive Trackhouse Racing’s well-known PROJECT91 No. 91 open entry carrying sponsorship from the circuit’s namesake, Qualcomm. The team previously teased a return of the car in social media posts and an interview with team owner Justin Marks.
• Magnussen, a second-generation driver, has seen stints in both Formula One, with teams like McLaren and Haas, and Sports Car Racing during his career. His father, Jan Magnussen, made his own NASCAR debut at California’s Sonoma Raceway in 2010.
• For his part, Magnussen is perhaps in luck with his selection of track, as he will be on equal footing to the rest of the field, given the uncertainty of the new street course. Still, his inexperience could present its own number of challenges.
• In driving the No. 91, Magnussen joins an elite list of drivers in the open team’s short history. This includes Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, Supercars legend turned NASCAR star Shane van Gisbergen, and four-time Indianapolis 500 Champion Helio Castroneves.
