What’s Happening?

As part of his preparation for his Talladega debut, Garrett Mitchell, better known by his screen name Cleetus McFarland, got a lesson in racing at Talladega from Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“Dega”

Since his first ARCA race in February, Garrett Mitchell (Cleetus McFarland) can’t seem to stay away from the sport. With his next race coming up this weekend, Mitchell and Dale Earnhardt Jr got together at Talladega to prepare the NASCAR rookie for his debut at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

During this video, Earnhardt, a six-time Cup Series winner and a one-time Xfinity Series winner at Talladega, drove Mitchell around the wide, high-banked superspeedway. Earnhardt showed Mitchell every bump and oddity found on the track. He even showed Mitchell how to run a perfect qualifying lap at the track.

Unfortunately for Earnhardt, afterward, he found out from Mitchell that ARCA does not do solo runs in qualifying; rather, the series opts for a group outing. In response, Mitchell joked to Earnhardt, “I either have to lead, or talk ’em into watching this video.”

After Earnhardt’s lesson, which included an explanation of how to pit at Talladega, the two went to the Talladega Museum. Earnhardt’s Dirty Mo Media teased the video last week after Mitchell uploaded it. Earnhardt drove Mitchell’s converted drag racing NASCAR Truck, which is often called the “Dale Truck.”

Cleetus in NASCAR

This video, while a great collaborative effort for both parties, is an important lesson for Mitchell, who is set to make his second-ever NASCAR start in the ARCA Menards Series race this Saturday. With over four million subscribers on YouTube, Mitchell is a true outsider in NASCAR. However, he is taking his pursuits in the sport seriously.

Mitchell made his ARCA debut with Rette Jones Racing at Daytona in February. He crashed early on and finished a disappointing 30th after showing speed in practice.

Mitchell has been open about his goal of racing in the Daytona 500 one day. Though his sponsorship could likely already land him an Xfinity Series ride, the 30-year-old is pacing himself to ensure that he doesn’t rush himself to the Cup.

As Mitchell told Corey LaJoie on the Apr. 22 episode of the podcast Stacking Pennies, “The dumbest thing I could do is do what everyone else is trying to do and just jump to Cup, and then they look like idiots.”

As part of these efforts, McFarland is racing once again in RJR’s No. 30 this weekend at Talladega and on Sept. 11 at Bristol. Fans and industry members like Earnhardt have been accepting of the outsider due to his commitment to taking the sport seriously, and perhaps one day, he will make it to Daytona.
