What’s Happening?
NASCAR is penalizing Chase Briscoe and the No. 19 team following the Daytona 500 post-race inspection. The L2 penalties cite “Modification of a single source supplied part,” NASCAR is stripping the team and driver of 100 points, 10 NASCAR Playoff points, and $100,000. NASCAR will suspend Briscoe’s Crew Chief James Small for four races.
The spoiler modification on the Briscoe car was to the spoiler base, where the spoiler base bolts to the deck lid had been modified. The spoiler base is a single source part. https://t.co/jjK6oUQPQE

- This penalty was for the team’s modification of the spoiler, which is a single source part of the NASCAR Next Gen car. According to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, the team modified the spoiler base.
- Prior to this penalty, Briscoe was tenth in Cup Series standings and had 33 points. Briscoe will now plummet to 39th in points with -67 points. This places him below the 37th-place tie between Zane Smith, Josh Berry, and Martin Truex Jr., who all have one point.
- In the NASCAR Cup Series, drivers can earn regular season points by winning a race (a maximum of 40), winning one of two stages (for a combined maximum of 20), and running the fastest lap (a maximum of 1) for a total of 61 points. This means that if Briscoe wins both stages, runs the fastest lap, and wins Sunday’s race at Atlanta, he will likely remain last in Cup Series points with negative six points.
- Furthermore, Briscoe will be without his Crew Chief James Small until the Mar. 23 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In their first race together, Small and Briscoe sat on the pole for Sunday’s Daytona 500 but fell short, finishing fourth.
