What’s Happening?

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has overturned the massive L2 penalty assessed to Chase Briscoe following the Daytona 500. On Feb. 19, NASCAR penalized Briscoe a monumental $100,000, 100 driver’s points, and 10 playoff points for alleged modification of a single source supplied part.

  • As part of the NMAP’s ruling, Briscoe and Joe Gibbs Racing will regain all points, playoff points, and money from the penalty. Furthermore, Briscoe’s Crew Chief James Small will not serve a four-race suspension for the now-revoked penalty.
  • Following the 2025 Daytona 500, Briscoe’s No. 19 was taken back to NASCAR’s R&D Center. Shortly after, NASCAR found what they believed to be a modification to the spoiler base, a single-source part. The alleged modification was an elongation of holes used to attach the spoiler base to the car’s decklid.
  • The NMAP says that they believe the elongation of these holes is due to the process of attaching the spoiler. “The panel believes that the elongation of some of the holes on the number 19 Cup car spoiler base is caused by the process of attaching that specific spoiler base to the rear deck and not modification of the single source part.”
  • When NASCAR first assessed this penalty, Briscoe fell to 39th in Cup Series points with -67 points. He currently sits 46th with -28 points. Following the overturning of this penalty, Briscoe will be tied with Carson Hocevar for 14th at 72 points.
