What’s Happening?

Spire Motorsports Driver Carson Hocevar is leaning into his Dale Earnhardt comparisons this weekend, with his No. 77 Chevrolet sporting a throwback to The Intimidator at Darlington Raceway.

  • Hocevar, who has gained a reputation for an unapologetic and at times highly aggressive racing style, has often been compared to Earnhardt in both serious and sarcastic ways. For NASCAR’s race weekend at historic Darlington Raceway, the Michigan native is furthering the comparisons with a flashback to the seven-time champion.
  • For this race weekend, Hocevar’s No. 77 Chili’s Chevrolet will carry a design similar to Earnhardt’s 1981 Wrangler car. To boot, the former Rookie of the Year, a title he shares with Earnhardt, will also sport a matching themed firesuit, including a faux belt and vest.
  • The 1981 season is ironically one of the few in which Earnhardt did not find victory lane. Instead, the then 30-year-old driver finished seventh in points in his final year driving for Rod Osterlund (and technically J.D. Stacy), before moving to Richard Childress Racing by season’s end, ending a stretch from 1979 to 1981 that produced six wins and a championship.
  • Though there is no official NASCAR throwback paint scheme weekend this season, some teams, such as Hocevar’s No. 77 and RFK Racing’s full three-driver lineup, are sporting throwback paint schemes. Drivers in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series are also sporting throwbacks.
