What’s Happening?

The estates of two of the victims from the December 18 plane crash that took the lives of seven individuals, including NASCAR legend Greg Biffle and his family, have filed wrongful death lawsuits against the Biffle estate.

  • The lawsuits filed by the estates of the Dutton family, of whom Dennis Dutton was the pilot of Biffle’s 1981 Cessna Citation, are seeking a combined $30 million in damages from the Biffle estate, citing Biffle’s responsibility for proper maintenance of the plane he owned through his company GB Aviation Leasing LLC.
  • Dennis and his son Jack were both killed in the December 18 plane crash that also took the lives of Greg, his wife Cristina, their son Ryder, his daughter Emma, and Craig Wadsworth.
  • A January 31 preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board said that during the flight, both Dennis, the pilot, and Jack, the co-pilot, were at times behind the controls of the plane. The report clarified that Jack, who had 175 hours of flight experience, “was not qualified to perform second in command duties.”
  • That same report also noted that during the flight, recorded comments from Dennis Dutton suggested the altitude indicator and “additional left side flight instruments” were not working properly. As of press time, the NTSB has yet to produce its final report, with early estimates in December saying a final report from the investigation could come in 12 to 18 months.
