NASCAR Cup Series driver Alex Bowman’s plans for this weekend’s race at Darlington Raceway are still uncertain as the preliminary entry list for Sunday’s Cup Series race features Bowman’s name, much like it did last week.
While Bowman is the listed driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48, that does not mean he is cleared to race following a vertigo diagnosis following the race at Circuit of the Americas.
Last week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, HMS listed Bowman as the driver of the No. 48 in the race’s preliminary entry list before announcing Justin Allgaier as the driver on Wednesday.
This means that HMS could pull the same move this week should Bowman not get the green light to return to the track.
Another question facing Bowman is his status for Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race. This race would be his first of two in JR Motorsports’ No. 88, but, unlike the Cup Series, the driver of the No. 88 is listed as TBA on the OAP Series entry list.
If Bowman is not cleared to race, there is uncertainty about who could take over for him, as there are plenty of options both in JRM and the Hendrick camp for the job.
If Bowman is cleared to race this weekend, there is a world where he does not drive the No. 88 and focuses on the Cup Series, though neither Bowman nor either Chevrolet team has commented on this matter.
Once medical professionals and NASCAR clear Bowman to return, it’s likely his focus will be on the Cup Series and making the Chase, as the No. 48 is already in a hole, sitting 94 points below the 16th-place cutline with 21 races till NASCAR’s postseason.
