Superspeedway racing is one of the most polarizing styles of racing both amongst fans and drivers. Some love it, some hate it, and some tolerate it. Here are a few drivers who probably are not huge fans of racing on superspeedways.
By the Numbers: 0 Wins; 3 Top-5s; 5 Top-10s; 66 Laps Led; 18 Races
Breakdown: Tyler Reddick has had a few races in his career at these types of tracks where he has run well, but he has failed to close the deal with a win. He finished fifth in the spring at Atlanta, but when he is not in the top-5, he is usually crashing. He has 12 finishes outside of the top-25 in 18 races at these types of tracks.
By the Numbers: 0 Wins; 1 Top-5; 6 Top-10s; 95 Laps Led; 28 Races
Breakdown: The one silver lining for Daniel Suarez is that Atlanta is the sight of his one and only superspeedway top-5. He also has run well in his last few races at Daytona and Talladega, but superspeedways have and always will be a crapshoot. Will Suarez continue his improvement this weekend?
By the Numbers: 0 Wins; 4 Top-5s; 10 Top-10s; 33 Laps Led; 40 Races
Breakdown: He’s had his good moments, but he’s had his rough ones as well. A.J. Allmendinger’s finishes on superspeedways this season reflect that as a sixth place finish in the Daytona 500 was backed up by a 16th at Atlanta and a 29th at Talladega. It’s feast or famine, but primarily famine including two flips.
By the Numbers: 0 Wins; 1 Top-5; 8 Top-10s; 78 Laps Led; 38 Races
Breakdown: Kyle Larson has had bad luck on superspeedways as well as both the old and new version of Atlanta. His best finish in three races on the “new” Atlanta is 13th which came last summer. On old Atlanta, Larson led 269 laps in 2021 only to be passed late by Ryan Blaney
By the Numbers: 0 Wins; 6 Top-5s; 16 Top-10s; 271 Laps Led; 76 Races
Breakdown: Martin Truex Jr. has come oh so close on superspeedways before, most notably the 2016 Daytona 500. However, if he is not coming in a close-second, he is usually caught up in the big wreck. Superspeedways are a roulette wheel, slot machine, crapshoot, whatever metaphor you desire, and Truex usually finds himself out of some cash.
Superspeedway races are a complete wild card, and some drivers have found themselves on the wrong end more often than not. Maybe these driver’s misfortunes turn around this weekend.
