Return of Nashville Fairgrounds Faces More Political Obstruction

Adam Stern reposted a Tennessee Lookout piece reporting Metro Nashville sued to stop a change to lower the amount of votes needed to approve the new Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway from 27 to 21 votes. Bristol Motor Speedway has provided potential plans to renovate the track with a new 30,000 seat facility at the current Fairgrounds track.

• The Nashville Fairgrounds has been viewed as a potential sight for NASCAR in the future for years now, but it has had difficulty getting political support. The Tennessee Lookout reported that the move to lower the amount of votes necessary to renovate the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway from 27 to 21 was passed on May 5.
• The Nashville Fairgrounds hosted 42 Cup Series events between 1958 and 1984. The last race at the venue was won by Geoff Bodine in July of 1984. Darrell Waltrip cut his teeth driving at this track before becoming a star in NASCAR.
• This news is disappointing to fans on social media. This is a track that many fans want back on the schedule, but it seems like local opposition is keeping that from happening.

It seems with each passing month that a new hurdle gets in the way of the Nashville Fairgrounds. NASCAR coming back to the Fairgrounds would be a great return to NASCAR’s roots, but if the local politicians do not want it, then how much longer can NASCAR pursue it.
