Newly Formed Stock Car Racing Series Terminates 2026 Season

What’s Happening?

The International Hot Rod Association has canceled the remainder of its 2026 Stock Car Series just a few races into its inaugural season.

During the 2025 off-season, NASCAR fans and motorsports fans alike followed the storyline of the International Hot Rod Association, long-known for its sanctioning of drag racing, and their new Stock Car Series.

This series was not anything too bold, fielding late models split into two divisions, Pro and Limited; still, its introduction was a welcome sight for fans beyond just the competition.

One of the more notable aspects of this effort is that the IHRA had purchased several former NASCAR tracks, including the road course/drag strip Heartland Motorsports Park, Memphis Motorsports Park, and Rockingham Speedway, in a short period of time.

Still, a lot has changed over the past few months, and just a few races into the series’ inaugural season, the IHRA announced Monday evening that the season was coming to a premature end.

In a lengthy post on its Facebook, the organization, which has also canceled numerous drag racing events, said that the decision was the most “responsible course of action.”

While they did cancel the rest of the 2026 season, the IHRA notably left the door open for the series to continue racing in 2027, saying:

“Rather than present events that do not meet the standards our competitors, promoters, sponsors, and fans deserve, we believe it is more important to take our time and invest our resources into creating a championship-caliber series that can return with a solid foundation and a clear vision for the future.”

Regardless, this moment is another piece in a puzzle that has been taking shape throughout this season, and the last week in particular, for the organization.

Drag racing fans have kept a close eye on the IHRA throughout the past few weeks, as rumors and reports indicated the organization was overhauling high-ranking staff.

NASCAR fans really had their attention piqued last week when some reports surfaced that the IHRA may be coming to an end altogether, with motorsports reporter Aaron England posting to X on Thursday night that a source told him the sanctioning body had “folded.”

While the IHRA has also canceled the remainder of the 2026 Outlaw Nitro Series season, there is no official word as to whether or not the organization as a whole has “folded,” and as many have pointed out, their post to Facebook indicates that they are interested in continuing their stock car division in 2027.

Despite a rocky start to the series history, the stock car series managed to knock out a few races on its eight-race schedule before Monday’s announcement, with its final race of 2026 coming on June 27 at South Carolina’s Anderson Motor Speedway.

Just a few weeks ago, the series announced some schedule changes, removing the races at Memphis, raising concerns about the future of the tracks purchased this past offseason.

While there is no news on the future of Memphis or Rockingham, the latter of which still hosts a NASCAR weekend, this past weekend, fans noticed that Heartland Motorsports Park was listed on a real estate website.

However, this listing was removed from the site by Monday afternoon, leaving fans with more questions than answers.
