What’s Happening?

Following heavy rainfall in the Joliet area and at Chicagoland Speedway, officials have reshuffled the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series schedule for this week’s Fourth of July race.

  • Initially, the weekend schedule featured OAP Series practice following a Friday afternoon ARCA Menards Series Qualifying session. After storms hit the area, NASCAR canceled qualifying for both series but will still give OAP Series drivers track time before tomorrow’s race.
  • With the field set by the metric, Connor Zilisch, in one of his part-time starts with JR Motorsports, will lead the field to green on Saturday. Prior to that, the originally scheduled practice session will now take place at 1:30 PM ET tomorrow, in place of the now-canceled qualifying session.
  • While this decision to cancel qualifying may be odd, it makes sense given the nature of this weekend’s race. The OAP Series race will mark the track’s first NASCAR National Series race since 2019, with most of the field unfamiliar with the track, having little to no time actually racing there.
  • This is a developing story. As of press time, NASCAR has yet to cancel or modify any on-track events for the NASCAR Cup Series. Cup Series practice will take place at 6 PM ET on Friday with qualifying at 3 PM ET on Saturday.
