What’s Happening?

A NASCAR official hinted there is the potential to “tighten” up the design of NASCAR’s street circuit at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado should the sport return in 2027.

It’s no secret that NASCAR is interested in returning to San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado in 2027, with talks of this interest sparking prior to this past weekend’s race at the track.

Still, the fact remains that the sport will have to work with the local community and support the operations of an active naval base. As NASCAR COO Ben Kennedy noted after the race, officials are “cognizant of the fact that this is an active military base.”

Nonetheless, there is plenty of support for a return in 2027 as broader discussions regarding next year’s NASCAR National Series’ schedules are already well underway.

Following Sunday’s race, President of NASCAR San Diego Amy Lupo suggested that NASCAR is open to making any necessary changes to the established setup at Naval Base Coronado if the sport were to secure a deal to return in 2027.

Lupo, speaking with FOX 5 San Diego, said that there are “tons of things we’d love to improve,” even going as far as to address tightening up the track’s 3.4-mile layout.

“Would we love to tighten it [the track] up and make it a little more smaller for the drivers, for the fans? I think again, lots of notes for ’27, and there’s tons of things we’d love to improve.” — Amy Lupo

Entering the race this past weekend, there were plenty of doubts among fans about the track’s size, which were sparked by the first (digital) on-board lap shown online by iRacing.

These discussions should have come as no surprise, as it sat far and above the 2.14-mile length of the Cup Series’ first Street Circuit in Chicago’s Grant Park, and neared double the length of Sonoma Raceway’s 1.99-mile Cup Series layout.

Still, the track delivered an exciting race, though fans and probably a few drivers may agree with the idea to “tighten” some areas of the course, especially after some big hits in certain areas of the track.

Even then, NASCAR has yet to confirm it will return to the track in 2027, with Ben Kennedy noting that execs will meet with Navy officials this week to discuss this past weekend’s race.

There are also rumors that the sport is in discussions to return to Chicago in 2027, which could add a second street circuit to the Cup Series schedule.
