What’s Happening?

NASCAR’s weekend of references to Top Gun is over, but there’s still time to close the book on San Diego. Here are the bottom five drivers from each NASCAR National Series race this past weekend at Naval Base Coronado.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series

Tyler Ankrum

At this rate, we might all have to look back at Tyler Ankrum’s 2025 season as one of the best one-season wonders in recent NASCAR history. A 10.8 average finish from last year is now in the 16s, which is ironically how long Tyler will be stuck in the Truck Series.

Jake Garcia

That solid finish at St. Petersburg really was a flash in the pan for the No. 98 team. Still, it’s not like Jake is the only one struggling at ThorSport (just a subtle reminder they haven’t won a race since late 2024).

Stewart Friesen

Let’s face it, no one expected Stewart Friesen to have a great showing at San Diego, and this weekend, he had the honor of ending his weekend before it ever really started with a practice crash.

Jamie McMurray

For clarification, everyone loves Jamie McMurray, great driver, great broadcaster, great personality. But who at Ram thought it was a good idea for him to make his return after the better part of a decade at a street circuit?

Corey LaJoie

This No. 10 truck has to be cursed, but hey, if Ram was going to score its first last-place finish since returning to NASCAR, why not take both of the bottom spots?

NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series

Baltazar Leguizamon

We aren’t writing off Baltazar Leguizamon’s record in other forms of racing. Still, his three NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series starts might be one of the worst stretches for any driver in recent history.

Sam Mayer

We can’t even joke about this week. Sam took a hard hit and walked away okay, and everybody was just glad to see that.

Anthony Alfredo

Another victim of that crazy multi-car crash, but just another reminder that Viking Motorsports had both cars flirting with Chase spots just a few weeks ago.

William Sawalich

Again, this is another driver caught up in that wild crash. Still, for a driver that qualifies so well, what happens on Saturdays that has the No. 18 team in the same spot they were last season?

Kyle Sieg

The more forgettable of the two Siegs now has another last-place finish to his record, but was he ever really going to do anything on a street circuit?

NASCAR Cup Series

Noah Gragson

Did anyone have Noah Gragson beefing with Jan Magnussen’s son on their bingo card for 2026? No? Just wanted to check.

Austin Hill

Hopes were high after Saturday for RCR, but things got a little awkward when Austin found his way between two Red Bulls and a hard place.

Connor Zilisch

The kid wants one weekend in Funkytown, but even on a street course, it’s just more pain for our Rookie of the Year.

Shane van Gisbergen

Who would have thought that Austin Hill and his own teammate would be the ones to (technically) finally cut down SVG’s street course dominance? A lot of people.

Christopher Bell

This was something that most people may have expected; nonetheless, Brent Crews got behind the wheel of a Cup car, and CBell’s title hopes stay alive despite his injury.
