What’s Happening?

If not for his recent dip in performance, Kyle Busch would be in the spotlight for very different reasons. Instead, the two-time champion now finds himself at the center of a brewing storm with his former teammate, Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin.

Following Hamlin’s take on the No. 8 driver’s slump on his podcast Actions Detrimental, when asked at Kansas Speedway, Busch’s reaction was sharp, framing the remarks as criticism that crossed a line.

But from the outside, it looked more like a misunderstanding than a genuine attack.

That’s exactly where eight-time Cup Series race winner Kyle Petty stepped in with some hard truths.

In fact, Petty’s view was straightforward: Hamlin didn’t say anything out of bounds. He argued it was a fair assessment of where things stand.

For Petty, the bigger issue wasn’t the comment itself, but Busch’s decision to escalate it publicly amidst his dismal slump.

“I don’t think Denny bashed him. I thought Denny was fair in his assessment. I think Kyle Busch’s skin is a little bit thin right now, rightfully so, because he is not doing anything on the racetrack. He is doing nothing on the racetrack. If you can’t beat your teammate, keep your mouth shut!” — Kyle Petty

At the core of this situation is interpretation. Hamlin shared his unfiltered take on the No. 8’s predicament, and Busch took offense to it. As a result, Busch amplified the moment.

Meanwhile, Petty’s stance reflects a broader old-school mindset of showing what you have on the track.

As of now, Busch is 27th in the standings with zeroes occupying the win, top-10, and top-5 columns. In contrast, his teammate Austin Dillon, despite two nasty DNFs, sits two spots above Busch at 25th, courtesy of two recent top-20 finishes.

Busch may have promised to make life difficult for Hamlin, but right now, the only thing getting harder is his own season.

While the Vegas native has turned up the volume off the track, Hamlin has largely stayed measured and let his performances do the talking.

And until that balance shifts, this feud isn’t being decided by words or warnings, but rather it’s being settled every weekend on the timing sheets, and the Busch is the one playing catch-up.
