What’s Happening?
A NASCAR executive hinted that the sport could have another new addition to the schedule in 2027 during a recent interview, continuing a trend of new additions that dates back to the 2021 season.
For the better part of 20 years, NASCAR fans grew used to a consistent, almost never-changing schedule for the NASCAR Cup Series.
But since the 2021 season, the sport has continued to shake things up almost yearly, retracting races from some tracks, granting those weekends to others, and even creating new places to race.
While the 2027 schedule is far from confirmed, the question of whether NASCAR will maintain its trend of adding a new venue or event to the calendar each season is a constant among the fanbase.
During a recent appearance on the Future of Fandom podcast, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Media and Revenue Officer, Brian Herbst, hinted that this trend, in his opinion, will likely continue into 2027.
“If you think about the last five years, we’ve run a race inside the Coliseum, tore up a football field, and raced inside LA Coliseum, talked earlier about the first international event that we ran at Mexico City since 1958, ran our first street course ever in Chicago in 2023. We’ll have another new bell and whistle, I’m sure, in 2027.” — Brian Herbst
Of course, while that is far from confirmation, Herbst’s comments are exciting for many fans, who frequently join the online conversation about where the sport should head in the coming seasons, with NASCAR slowly checking these dream tracks, like Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez last season, off the list of fan requests.
Major questions entering this next season center on the future of the Chicago Street Race and what will happen with the weekend event held by San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado, should the event be a one-off.

NASCAR’s New “Bells and Whistles” of the 2020s
While most fans credit the 2021 season as NASCAR’s first real year of change to the Cup Series schedule, there were small test runs before that year’s overhaul.
For example, in 2011, Kentucky Speedway joined the schedule as the first new track since Chicagoland and Kansas Speedway in 2001.
Ahead of the 2018 season, the fall oval race date at Charlotte Motor Speedway switched to the ROVAL.
In 2020, the sport moved the championship race from Homestead-Miami Speedway to Phoenix Raceway. From there, the annual new addition, or additions, to the schedule have come as follows:
- 2021 – Circuit of the Americas, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Nashville Superspeedway, Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Track
- 2022 – World Wide Technology Raceway
- 2023 – The Chicago Street Circuit
- 2024 – Iowa Speedway
- 2025 – The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium and Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez
- 2026 – Naval Base Coronado
There are very few rumors about what new addition could make the 2027 schedule, though many fans suggest another West Coast street race (any new race on the West Coast at that) or maybe even the first NASCAR Cup Series race in Canada since 1958.
