What’s Happening?

Following his recent approval to race in the Daytona 500, former NASCAR Cup Series Champion Brad Keselowski was seen using a cane to navigate the garage area ahead of Wednesday’s opening practice session.

  • Keselowski, who broke his femur on a family ski trip in mid-December, was cleared to race in the 500 on Monday. Despite the positive news of his option to race, Keselowski’s use of a cane shows just how narrow the window for him to race in the 500 was.
  • In the event that Keselowski would need to step away from the No. 6, the team does have a backup plan in place. Per Regan Smith of FOX Sports, former Roush-Fenway driver David Ragan is on standby in Daytona and could get behind the wheel during a practice session later this week.
  • Ragan, a former Cup Series Daytona race winner in his own right, is not the usual reserve driver for RFK, as the reserve driver, Corey LaJoie, is racing a fourth car for RFK this weekend. LaJoie, a long-time veteran of the series, drove the No. 6 at the Clash, and prior to his entry in the No. 99, was reportedly slated to be on standby for Keselowski this weekend.
  • Keselowski’s entry into this race, despite his injury, is proof of how much the veteran driver wants to win the Daytona 500. In his so far 16 career attempts to win the race, the 41-year-old has finished no better than 3rd in the Great American Race, leaving the 500 as the final achievement left unchecked in his Hall of Fame career.
