During a very action-packed evening in the online NASCAR community, the Superstar Racing Experience, a defunct all-star style touring series, made its return to social media.
In the midst of the fallout from Thursday’s preliminary injunction hearing between NASCAR and two of its teams, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, the official Superstar Racing Experience X account made its first post in over a year.
This post, a GIF of a bear coming out of hibernation, was not overlooked during the commotion, with fans wondering what it meant. While it is unclear just what the now-defunct racing series meant by this post, it comes a year after the series seemingly came to a controversial end.
In late 2024, Skip Barber Racing announced it had acquired the assets of SRX, which had cancelled its 2024 season due to “market factors that have proven too much to overcome.” But, following SBR’s announcement, SRX issued a statement saying that the transaction was to be private and that “neither party would announce the transaction without the prior consent of the other party.”
SRX went on to say that SBR “failed to pay any amount of the purchase price or otherwise fulfill their promise to close the transaction,” and did not own SRX and its assets. While SRX claimed to have filed a lawsuit against SBR, nothing else has come of this, and, at the time, it looked to be a sour end to the saga of SRX.
SRX was launched by Ray Evernham and Tony Stewart in late 2020 as a legend and all-star spec series similar to that of IROC, though SRX focused on local short tracks. While the series had a healthy fanbase, major names, and a solid media rights deal, it failed to make an impact with the broader racing community.
The series would fold after just three seasons of action, with Ryan Newman winning the final series title in 2023.
While SRX has been lain dormant since, fans are wondering if this post hints at a future for not only SRX but also the IROC style of racing series.
