It has been some time since rumors first surfaced that Speedway Motorsports, owners of Tennessee race tracks Bristol Motor Speedway and Nashville Superspeedway, was interested in helping revive the .596-mile short track. The track has not hosted a NASCAR National Series race since 2000, and a NASCAR Cup Series race since 1984.
Though those involved have faced pushback, Metropolitan Board of Fair Commissioners’ Jasper Hendricks recently told Stephen Elliott of The Nashville Banner that they are nearing the announcement of a deal with SMI to revive the fabled short track. Notably, Hendricks claimed that the deal will have “no financial obligation” from the city of Nashville.
While the track has its fair share of supporters, it does have detractors. Many hope the site will be used as a community space, such as parks or affordable housing. One of the biggest battles the track will face is its location within residential Nashville, as many tracks that were once located in isolated areas are now surrounded by neighborhoods that have to deal with the noise created by motorsports.
While the track continues to host local racing series, the only NASCAR regional touring series to race at the track is the ARCA Menards Series East, which held its race at the Fairgrounds on May 4. There are no set plans for the track’s future, though some renders of a renovation have floated around since the turn of the decade.
If the track gets renovated, another challenge it will face is finding a spot on an ever-changing NASCAR schedule, as the sport has already done some odd restructuring to the 2026 calendar linked above. However, its relationship with SMI might assist in that pursuit.
