- Wheeler served as President and General Manager at the 1.5-mile speedway in Concord, North Carolina, from 1975 to 2008. Throughout his time with Charlotte Motor Speedway, Wheeler focused on fans’ track-going experience, helping create a better venue and more entertainment aside from the racing with special acts like Robosaurus and many different stunts.
- Perhaps the crowning achievement of his time at the helm of Charlotte was the 1992 NASCAR All-Star Race, then known as The Winston. This was the first NASCAR All-Star race held at night and is remembered for the dramatic finish between Dale Earnhardt, Davey Allison, and Kyle Petty.
- Wheeler’s efforts to make fans’ race day experience the best it could be not only set the bar for CMS but also for NASCAR. In a statement, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France said, “Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas, and tireless passion. His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national footprint and cement Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex.”
- Earlier this season, Wheeler was recognized for his efforts and nominated as the recipient of the 2026 Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR.
