What’s Happening?

Following the suspension of Austin Hill on Tuesday afternoon, Richard Childress Racing is tapping Austin Dillon to drive the No. 21 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ HyVee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway this weekend.

  • Hill was suspended for intentionally wrecking Aric Almirola during the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past Saturday. Hill, who got loose off the nose of the No. 19, saved his car, then seemingly right-hooked Almirola, sending him nose-first into the outside wall.
  • NASCAR suspended Hill on Tuesday, and shortly after, RCR confirmed they would not appeal the penalty despite team owner Richard Childress’s initial pushback on Saturday. As the Xfinity Series will be racing with the Cup Series, RCR opted to have Austin Dillon fill in rather than an outside driver.
  • This not only makes for an easy race weekend arrangement for the team, but it keeps the No. 21 car in the fight for the NASCAR Xfinity Series owners’ championship. As for Hill, due to new rules regarding playoff waivers, he will lose all his Playoff points earned prior to the first race of the Xfinity Series playoffs on Sept. 12.
  • This weekend’s race will be Dillon’s second of the 2025 season, previously racing RCR’s No. 3 to a 13th-place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. Dillon, a former Xfinity Series champion, has three top-fives, four top-tens, and a pole in six career Xfinity starts at Iowa.
