What’s Happening?
Chicago finally got a dry street race, and it might be the last one. For the first time in three years, the event went caution-free for weather. No lightning. No darkness-shortened chaos. But while the track was dry, the drama wasn’t quite as electric. This week on the Groovy Gauge, presented by Lectric eBikes, Eric Estepp dives into a race that had potential, but didn’t quite hit top gear.
Groovy Gauge Score: 65%
- Eric appreciated the clean execution after two years of rain-soaked unpredictability, but mechanical issues for McDowell and Buescher left fans without the late-race duel they deserved. SVG had clean air and great tires, with no real challengers threatening the win.
- While the race had its moments, Eric pointed out that without the weather twist or a late battle, the final act was not good enough.
- On the broadcast front, TNT’s second outing disappointed. The booth lacked energy, camera cuts were off, and muffled sound mixing took away from the viewing experience. The network even cut to commercial during SVG’s victory burnouts, which left a sour taste.
- In the end, Eric says it was a decent, serviceable race, but not one for the history books. If this really was the last Chicago Street Race, it didn’t quite go out with a bang.
