What’s Happening?

NASCAR Cup Series team Rick Ware Racing released a statement today regarding Tuesday’s lawsuit filed against them by fellow Cup Series team Legacy Motor Club.

  • The response addresses LMC’s claims that Rick Ware Racing “wants to back out” of selling a charter to the two-car Toyota outfit. According to Jordan Bianchi of the Athletic, RWR believed they were selling the charter for the 2027 season but backed out after the agreement included 2026.
  • In their statement, RWR claims that this new lawsuit “distorts the actual facts and is a misguided attempt to tarnish our reputation.” While this could refer to the suit’s transactional implications, it could also refer to certain statements made in the lawsuit by LMC.
  • Alongside subsections like “RWR Gets Cold Feet,” one of many redacted from the public filing, the lawsuit also claims that RWR is facing financial problems. For reference, page two of the lawsuit states, “Strapped for cash, and unable to compete at a Cup Series level by its admission, RWR needed to sell one of its two charters.”
  • RWR, a single-car Ford team, currently owns two charters. One is entered under No. 51 with Ware’s son Cody, and the other is leased to RFK Racing for their No. 60 entry. LMC, a two-car team, owns two charters; RWR leased charters from LMC under its former name, Richard Petty Motorsports, from 2018 to 2021.
