What’s Happening?

Though Chevrolet does not have a suitable replacement for the current Camaro body style, a recent interview with a General Motors Motorsports Executive revealed that the replacement for the Camaro ZL1 will be a Chevrolet, dispelling the popular fan theory of a Cadillac successor.

In a recent report from V8 Sleuth, Eric Warren, Executive Director of Global Motorsports Competition at GM, claims, “I can assure you we are working on what’s coming next, and it will be exciting for both NASCAR and Supercars, the Chevrolet and what we’re racing in those series.”

Both the Supercars Championship and NASCAR are dealing with the same issue. Since GM retired the Camaro in 2024, the future of the bowtie brand in both series has been in the air.

Some fans of both series, however, have fantasized, or all around speculated, that another GM makes, Cadillac, and its CT5 model, could or should be considered as a replacement. Some fans have gone as far as to make high-quality renders of what a Cadillac on the NASCAR Next Gen Body could look like.

Chevrolet has a very long and storied history in NASCAR. The brand won its first race on Mar. 26, 1955, and holds the records for most Manufacturer Championships, Driver Championships, and Daytona 500 wins. It would be a dramatic yet unlikely shift by GM to pull the brand, something Warren agrees with, as this report claims the next model “will definitely be a Chevy.”

Background

Currently, Chevrolet continues to run the Camaro body at the Cup and Xfinity Series levels without the Camro branding, opting for just “Chevrolet” instead. However, the only remnant of the Camaro branding is a small ZL1 logo on the grille of the Cup Series ride.

Most figured 2025 would be the final season for the Camaro body in NASCAR, a tricky spot as the brand has no suitable sedan-style cars to replace it. Jim Campbell of GM answered this looming question at the unveiling of Chevrolet’s NASCAR EV prototype in February. Campbell told the media that the Camaro will be around for the “next couple of years.”

While this is welcome news for tried and true fans of Chevrolet, for those who wanted a refreshed GM in NASCAR, those dreams are left to custom paint schemes in iRacing lobbies.
