What’s Happening?

NASCAR heads back to the East Coast and Florida’s Homestead-Miami Speedway for the next race of the NASCAR Schedule. This weekend, all three NASCAR National Series will be in action, hoping to shake up a uniform start to the season.

  • Homestead-Miami Speedway opened in 1995, but it would have to wait to host the NASCAR Cup Series. The track was originally shaped like a rectangle, similar to Indianapolis Motor Speedway; however, it was redeveloped in 1997 to its current oval shape.
  • The NASCAR Cup Series debuted at Homestead in 1999 and has hosted one race a year ever since. Yet, the NASCAR Xfinity Series was the debut series at the track, racing there in 1995, with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series following up in 1996.
  • From 2002 to 2019, Homestead made its name as the host of NASCAR’s season finale. Since losing the honor in 2020, the track has flipped from a spring race to a fall race and back to a spring race.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

  • Kyle Larson is attempting something few have ever had a shot at; a National Series weekend sweep. Larson will enter the Truck, Xfinity, and Cup Series races at Homestead this weekend. Like most drivers with a dirt background, Larson is solid at Homestead. However, he has a fleet of hungry championship contenders behind him in each series.
  • Through 13 races into the NASCAR National Series season, the truck series has only two different winners, while the Cup Series has only three. This weekend serves as a fresh start and an end to the West Coast Swing; perhaps some new drivers will break out as early-season contenders.
  • Fans have long expressed their interest in moving the Championship back to Miami. There is a lot of pressure on Homestead this weekend in particular; in November, when discussing this topic, NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell stated, “I would say that in March when we go back [to Homestead], how do we do from an attendance standpoint? That’s going to be really big for us to see.”
