What’s Happening?

Yesterday, yet another major NASCAR story broke. However, this story is different from those we have already heard this year. An engineer at Joe Gibbs Racing has allegedly sold team information to one of JGR’s competitors. So, who do fans think the alleged buyer is?

  • According to Jenna Fryer of AP Sports, the team that purchased the information is a non-playoff team. This note narrows down the list of potential buyers.
  • NASCAR cannot act on this controversy until any involved teams file a lawsuit or formal complaint. This means that this story could become a major moment in the 2024 season or a future forgotten story of NASCAR history.

Who Are The Candidates?

This news is just a small tidbit about what has been a crazy month for NASCAR and its teams. This month’s news includes scoring drama, controversy surrounding the clarity of the Damaged Vehicle Policy, and an antitrust suit against NASCAR.

Fans have taken all this news excitedly, and most fans are thirsty for as many rumors and theories as possible. So, when this story broke yesterday afternoon, most fans jumped into the rumor mill to see what they could find out.

Based on the little information available from the initial report, we can narrow down the alleged team to a short list of non-playoff teams. This list includes:

  • Kaulig Racing
  • Legacy Motor Club
  • Richard Childress Racing
  • Rick Ware Racing
  • Spire Motorsports

Many fans immediately jumped to theorizing that Legacy MC was the culprit. The team switched to Toyota earlier this year and doesn’t have as tight a relationship with JGR as 23XI Racing.

However, fans are basing most of these theories on speculation about LMC’s relationship with JGR and poor performance in 2024. Furthermore, some of these posts seem to be jokes about just how difficult LMC’s season has been.

However, one team is making the rounds more than others.

Why Are People Pointing to RCR?

Richard Childress Racing is having a difficult season. After back-to-back multi-win seasons, including a three-win campaign last season with future Hall-of-Famer Kyle Busch. Unfortunately, RCR has just one win this season, but the drama surrounding the finish removed it from playoff eligibility.

At Richmond Austin, Dillon seemingly had one of the best cars on track during the entire race weekend. However, entering turns three and four on the final lap, Dillon spun leader Joey Logano and third-place driver Denny Hamlin for the win.

These actions resulted in an automatic playoff bid disqualification. However, it boosted the momentum and speed of both RCR cars, with Kyle Busch rattling off some of his best work following Richmond and heading into the playoffs.

This late-season momentum, combined with a previously overlooked interview and several rumor mill pages, is positioning RCR in the crosshairs of many fans.

In an interview with NASCAR Corner during Michigan’s race weekend, the race after Richmond, Ty Gibbs raised suspicion about RCR’s recent success.

“But, definitely questionable where they [RCR] got all that speed from as well, right? I mean, they haven’t been running good at all, now, all the sudden, they are super fast. So, definitely curious on that.” — Ty Gibbs

This quote has become the center of many fan theories about who allegedly bought this information. However, these are just theories. While this could be the answer to our question, many other teams could be the alleged team. While the rumor mill is fun, it will be worth it to wait and see who, if NASCAR does launch an investigation, may have done this.
