What’s Happening?

NASCAR Silly Season is in full swing. It seems like when one domino falls, another comes out of nowhere, bringing more questions than answers. Some drivers found their homes for 2025, while others might have lost theirs for the rest of this season. Let’s give you guys a recap of this week’s Silly Season news!

  • Josh Berry was announced as the driver of the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 in 2025. He’ll replace third-year driver Harrison Burton in the famed ride, staying in Ford camp. With Briscoe moving to Toyota, WBR quickly got their second choice.
  • As mentioned, Burton is without a ride for the 2025 season. The young driver has struggled in his time in Cup and many believe a move down to the Xfinity or Truck Series could be what he needs.
  • Hailie Deegan will not race in the No. 15 for AM Racing at Chicago. Joey Logano will step in the role. It is unknown whether Deegan will return to her Xfinity Series ride this season.

Berry Confirmed to the Wood Brothers

Josh Berry was announced as the team’s new driver in 2025. He’ll replace Harrison Burton and becomes the second Stewart-Haas Racing driver to find a home after Chase Briscoe announced his plans last week. This move keeps Berry in the Ford camp, which has struggled to maintain drivers over the past few years. Many reports indicate that this is a multi-year deal. Berry has impressed as a Cup Series rookie, leading the Rookie of the Year standings and sitting 19th in the standings.

While the driver of the No. 4 team has found his home for next year, the crew chief has yet to do the same. Rodney Childers was not seen at Wednesday’s press conference, leaving many to speculate he will not join his driver over at the No. 21 team next season. Berry and Childers were seen as a duo that could land as a packaged deal for a team, but it seems the Wood Brothers and Team Penske have other plans. It’ll be very interesting to see how Berry performs in 2025 if he doesn’t have his top-of-the-line crew chief in his ear.

Where Does Harrison Burton Go?

Berry’s move to the Wood Brothers leaves Burton without a ride for next season. After struggling for two years and counting, the 23-year-old will need to find a new home for 2025. To say it has been a struggle for Burton would be an understatement. He has yet to finish in the top five since his rookie season, and every year has gotten worse since he made his full-time debut in 2022.

So where can Harrison go? He is unlikely to return to the Cup Series, given his lack of results. Maybe he lands himself part-time with Kaulig or Rick Ware in their “All-Star” entries, but a full-time ride is probably out the window. A good fit for Burton could be to head back down to the Xfinity Series to drive for the Haas Factory Team in 2025. If the team performs like their SHR predecessor, he’ll be in some of the best equipment the series has to offer. Burton has talent, and he brings funding, so his place in the sport, while maybe not in the Cup, is almost certain.

Deegan Out for Chicago Street Race

In a surprise move, AM Racing has pulled rookie Xfinity Series driver Hailie Deegan from the No. 15 Mustang for this weekend’s Chicago Street Race and replaced her with Joey Logano. Bob Pockrass reported that AM Racing is still TBD on who will drive the car at Pocono, meaning Deegan could be gone from the seat for good.

Deegan’s struggles have been well documented. She currently sits 27th in the standings, last among full-time drivers and behind part-timers such as Kyle Sieg and Aric Almirola. Deegan has failed to impress in her NASCAR National Series career, dating back to the Truck Series and despite an impressive Xfinity Series debut in 2022, that performance has yet to be replicated.

So, where does Deegan go? She could return to the No. 15 at Pocono after one race on the sidelines, but the language from AM makes it seem like that is unlikely. We don’t know what the future holds for Hailie Deegan, but we know her current situation and the chances of her being replaced permanently are a real possibility.
