What’s Happening?

Teresa Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Incorporated have decided not to renew the DEI No. 8 trademark, meaning Dale Earnhardt Jr. is set to acquire his iconic number again. According to BrakeHard, it expired on Monday, June 3rd, without renewal from DEI, opening the door for the trademark to move, pending approval from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • In May, DEJ Holdings LLC, the holding company for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s business ventures, filed an application for the trademark with the USPTO. This piqued the interest of many Earnhardt Jr. fans, hoping to see him regain the rights to his old number font.
  • Teresa Earnhardt has held the rights to the trademark since she took over DEI in 2001 after Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s tragic death. She’s been very protective of most of the company’s trademarks since then, but she appears to be letting this one go.
  • Fans are excited about this news. They feel that Dale Earnhardt Jr. made the number famous, and they are happy to see him hopefully regain the trademark.
