What’s Happening?
NASCAR officially announced its 2024 rules package for short tracks and road courses on Wednesday. The highlight of the package is a simplified rear diffuser with fewer vertical strakes. The rules package will first be used for the March 10th race at Phoenix Raceway, and it will not be used at the LA Coliseum.
- The changes to the rules package come after two major short-track package tests during 2023. First was a test at Richmond in the summer followed by a test at Phoenix in December. Richmond tested a package with no rear diffuser, while the Phoenix test tested a simplified diffuser.
- The short track and road course package has been the source of much scrutiny since the Next-Gen car was introduced. Fans have generally not enjoyed the racing product with the Next-Gen car.
- Fans did not love the new changes. Most fans would like to see horsepower added to the cars at short tracks and road courses, so, no change to horsepower is not loved by fans.
