The Clock is Ticking on These Silly Season Moves: Kaulig, DiBenedetto, Muniz, and More

What’s Happening?

The Clash at the Coliseum is less than a month away, and there are a few teams and drivers still without plans for the 2024 NASCAR season at all levels. The clock is ticking for some of these drivers and race teams to make their moves heading into 2024.

  • As the 2024 season gets closer, some seats remain unoccupied, and some drivers remain without rides. As the offseason rolls on and the start of the season draws closer, these storylines become more and more important.
  • For this list, we will focus on the more prominent storylines during this offseason. We will stay away from the part-time rides and less prominent storylines.
  • The fans continually follow all of these storylines as the offseason goes on. It is one of fans’ favorite things to speculate about.

Cup Series: Kaulig Racing #16 Car

For now, it looks like Kaulig Racing will field an All-Star car in 2024 with their #16 entry in the Cup Series. Kaulig announced in December that Allmendinger will race in the Daytona 500 for the team in the #16 car, which seems to confirm it will be multiple drivers. The question becomes, who races for the team?

Maybe Josh Williams could make some starts in the Cup Series with the team. Matt DiBenedetto is a driver many fans have linked to the ride as well. Overall, this will be a ride to watch for as the season goes on.

Where Will Matt DiBenedetto Go?

Matt DiBenedetto recently tweeted out a pen emoji, seemingly indicating he knows where he will be racing in 2024. The question is, where will he race?

Many linked him to DGM before Josh Bilicki was announced. AM Racing was another team, but, Bob Pockrass quenched those rumors by saying he would be “Surprised” if that happened. Maybe Rick Ware Racing or Kaulig Racing either part-time or full-time in the Cup Series could happen as well, but, those are still uncertain.

Cup Series: Second Rick Ware Racing Car

Rick Ware Racing made a splash early in the silly season by signing Justin Haley from Kaulig Racing. Since then, however, they have not announced plans for their second chartered entry. Last season, they ran multiple drivers in both of their cars, and this car could get the same treatment in 2024.

However, the outside possibility still remains that a full-time driver could race for the team in 2024. Even then, the free agent pool is quite limited.

Where Will Frankie Muniz Go?

Frankie Muniz has been silent throughout the offseason. Many are excited to see where he can go in 2024 after a solid season in the ARCA Menards Series. However, his options with Ford are getting limited.

RSS Racing picked up another full-time driver in Blaine Perkins recently. Emerling-Gase has not announced their plans, but, will Patrick Emerling and Joey Gase give up that much seat time? AM Racing might be a place for Muniz, but, will they even expand? Speaking of which…

Xfinity Series: Does AM Racing Expand?

AM Racing mentioned that they hope to expand to a second Xfinity Series car in 2024. Still, nothing has been announced on that front. AM Racing also had a second team notably absent from their Hailie Deegan announcement.

Will they expand, or will they stick with one car for 2024? If they expand, then Brett Moffitt may return to the team, but, nothing has been officially announced on that front. If Moffitt walks, then could DiBenedetto or even Muniz jump in?

Truck Series: What Will Young’s Motorsports Do?

Spencer Boyd leaving Young’s Motorsports to start his own team opens up an interesting ride in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The team will move to the Xfinity Series with Lelan HOneyman Jr. as the driver, and they described that move as an “Expansion”.

That means they will likely field a Truck Series team in 2024. Could this be where Matt DiBenedetto goes? Why not bring in a Truck Series winner to a team that has won two races in the past?

These are all storylines that have yet to be determined in Silly Season. The clock is ticking.

Lionel Racing Reveals First Wave of 2026 NASCAR Authentics Diecast

What’s Happening?

Lionel Racing finally confirmed the first wave of 2026 NASCAR Authentics 1:64 scale diecast for Monday morning, with the line of retail-exclusive diecast featuring a new look for the new year.

  • This line will include six throwback paint schemes from NASCAR’s 2025 throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway. Though they did not release one in 2025, this move restarts an annual tradition of Lionel releasing at least one wave of cars carrying the colors of that prior season’s throwback designs.
  • Included in this wave of cars are Austin Cindric, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, William Byron, and Sammy Smith. Alongside these paint schemes’ debuts in the Authentics line is a new design for the packaging of the 2026 line of NASCAR Authentics.
  • Last season was somewhat turbulent for Lionel as, alongside issues with tariffs, the brand only released three waves of NASCAR Autentics, one wave of NASCAR Autentics Winners Circle diecast, and two waves of Haulers.
  • Lionel announcing the first wave of 2026 early on in the new year is perhaps a sign that 2026 could return this line to its regular release schedule. The post from Lionel Racing also confirmed that the brand will announce another wave by the end of the week, further hinting at a recommitment to the Authentics line.

Chase Pistone, NASCAR Trucks and Nationwide Series Driver, Passes Away

What’s Happening?

Chase Pistone, a former competitor on the short track racing circuit in addition to NASCAR’s National Series, has passed away. Pistone, now a successful Legends Car owner, was 42.

  • Chase’s brothers Nick and Tom Pistone confirmed the North Carolina natives’ passing to LegendsNation.com. The cause of Pistone’s passing is unknown. The family asked that media share the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number, which is 988.
  • Pistone, the grandson of NASCAR legend “Tiger” Tom Pistone, made his way to NASCAR after competing on short tracks in Legends cars and Late Models. He would make his jump to NASCAR via the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2005, racing for Green Light Racing at Martinsville Speedway.
  • Pistone would continue his NASCAR pursuits in 2006, racing in ARCA and the NASCAR Busch Series. Unfortunately, these two starts, at Martinsville with the Busch Series and Iowa with ARCA, would be his last for nearly a decade.
  • Pistone returned to NASCAR in 2014, racing in a combined eight NASCAR Camping World Truck and Nationwide Series races. During this season, his final in NASCAR, the then 30-year-old scored his best National Series finish, ninth place in the Truck Series annual trip to Gateway.

8 Takeaways From NASCAR At COTA

Three races in, the 2026 season is finally starting to show its hand. COTA shifted narratives, exposed weaknesses, and raised new questions about contenders, pretenders, and everything in between.

  • Has Shane van Gisbergen officially been proven mortal after getting outraced late at Circuit of the Americas?
  • Is 19-year-old Connor Zilisch already ahead of schedule after slicing through the field multiple times?
  • With three straight wins, is Tyler Reddick basically a lock for the postseason this early?
  • And how concerned should the 48 team be after a rough weekend for Alex Bowman?

From substitute drivers being forced into action to points gaps growing faster than expected, COTA delivered more than just a road course chess match. There were momentum swings, reputation hits, and at least one young driver stacking up enemies before stacking up results.
