A silly season bombshell was dropped on Wednesday with Kyle Busch Motorsports announcing they were being sold to Spire Motorsports. This was a surprise to many who heard Kyle Busch mention his retirement dream of sharing a Truck with his son Brexton. The question is, what does the future hold for Kyle Busch, and will he own a race team in the future? Here are a few potential scenarios.
As Kyle Busch mentioned in his lengthy statement on social media, he is in a much different place now than he was when he started the race team. He has a lot of different business ventures he is involved in, and he also now has two kids with one involved in racing. He specifically mentioned Brexton’s racing schedule as a reason for why the change was made.
However, given Kyle’s master retirement plan of sharing a Truck with Brexton at the end of his career, it’s not out of the question that Kyle will get back into owning a race team at some point. He could potentially buy into a Truck Series team in the future, or he could start his own team once again. Maybe now is not the best time to do that, but maybe at some point, he could work on getting back into the ownership game after a break to focus on other things.
Many on social media were suggesting that Kyle Busch could potentially buy a stake in Richard Childress Racing. Nothing has been said to suggest that Childress is looking to sell any stake in his race team. However, Busch has seen drivers he knows well begin to work on buying their way into race teams or start their own teams.
Denny Hamlin partnered with Michael Jordan to start 23XI Racing, and Brad Keselowski, who also closed down a Truck Series team, bought into Roush-Fenway Racing to start RFK Racing. Could Busch try to do the same thing since he won’t have to be worried about running the entire operation himself? The sale of KBM does allow Busch to focus more on his Cup Series racing.
However, is Busch interested in buying or is Childress interested in selling? It doesn’t seem like Childress is going to make changes any time soon to his involvement with the race team, so, is he willing to sell some of his operation? He has been the head honcho of his team since he was a driver in the 1970s, so, it’s hard to say how willing he would be to do this.
Busch is stepping back at least for now to focus on his racing career with RCR and time with his family. Being a team owner requires a lot of commitment, and it may be time for Busch to step away totally. It all depends on how he wants to go about the final years of his career.
Maybe there are other things that Busch wants to personally do that he has not disclosed publicly. Maybe that does not include ownership, and he would rather focus on building up Brexton’s career aside from being an owner. It’s uncertain exactly what he would do, but, maybe being an owner is just not in Busch’s cards.
Kyle Busch’s future is now far more mysterious than it once was in terms of his ventures outside of racing. It will be interesting to see if any of these things happen.
