What’s Happening?
The NASCAR double-header with IndyCar continues. Just a couple of hours after the IndyCar Series race at Phoenix ended (their first at the venue since 2018), the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series took to the state-of-the-art short intermediate. Where’s what you need to keep an eye on heading into tonight’s race in the desert heat.

- Taylor Gray is starting tonight’s race from the best seat in the house. He put his No. 54 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing on the pole. Historically, Gray tends to run pretty well on short, flat ovals. He has a win at Martinsville and even a pair of top 10s at Phoenix. Expect him to be a big contender tonight.
- Gray’s not alone among the lightning-fast JGR drivers. Brandon Jones qualified in third with Brent Crews rolling off behind him in the 5th position. JGR seems to be the early favorites to win tonight’s race.
- Replacing Caruth is NASCAR Cup Series driver and former O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Champion for JRM, William Byron. He’s rolling off in the 6th position and will likely be a heavy favorite to go up against the JGR trio.
- Phoenix has been the home of heartbreak and triumph for 2024 series champion, Justin Allgaier. He tends to run very well at the track but sometimes, things just go wrong. If he wants to get up front tonight, he’ll have some work to do. He’s starting 17th.
- Not starting in the top 10 is Austin Hill. While his teammate Jesse Love is rolling off on the outside pole, Hill was forced to settle for 13th in time trials.
- Tires: How will the Goodyear rubber react to the Firestone rubber of IndyCar? Will there be a noticeable difference or will it be seamless between series? Keep an eye on that.
