What’s Happening?

Since the Daytona 500, rumors have run across the NASCAR world that Stellantis brands Dodge and Ram have an interest in returning to NASCAR. Although rumors indicate that Ram is closer to rejoining the sport than Dodge, if Dodge were to return to the top level of NASCAR, which teams would be a good fit?od fit?

Dodge’s Return to NASCAR

Reports that Dodge could return to NASCAR first surfaced at the Daytona 500. At the time, the report from catchfence.com focused on the Ram truck brand returning to the Truck Series next season. However, the initial report and subsequent reports suggest that should things work out, Dodge itself could be back in the Cup Series as early as 2027 or 2028.

While there are no current rumors of teams that could switch to Dodge, much like the brand’s 2001 return to the sport, a switch to Dodge could make smaller teams stand out amongst crowded OEM teammates. However, it would also be important for Dodge to find a top team to anchor its brand in NASCAR.

Team Penske

When news of Dodges potential return to NASCAR first hit the online community, fans suggested that Team Penske should make a jump back to Dodge. When Dodge withdrew from NASCAR in 2013, Penske was the face of the brand in NASCAR.

Penske even sent the brand out on top with its first Cup Series Drivers Championship since 1975. Prior to this period with Dodge, Penske raced Fords from 1994 to 2002 before making the jump to Dodge in 2003. However, following Dodges’ departure, Penske switched back to Ford.

While there is no indication that Penske, or any team, is switching to Dodge, this is more of a bucket list team fans want to see make the switch.

Trackhouse Racing

Trackhouse Racing is currently part of a packed house of Chevrolet teams. Furthermore, it is one of three teams using ECR Engines. While it seems set with Chevrolet, fans have fantasized about Trackhouse jumping from the bow-tie brand for some time now.

For Dodge, scoring a team like Trackhouse would be massive. Not only do they have one of the best lineups in the Cup Series, but they also have a knack for making viral moments. Whether it’s Hélio Castroneves, Shane van Gisbergen’s 2023 win, or Ross Chastains wall ride, Trackhouse seems to find itself making waves outside the NASCAR community.

However, if a team still establishing itself, much like Trackhouse, were to leave Chevrolet, the benefits received from Dodge would have to be massive. For now, this is a wild fan theory, but if circumstances change, who knows what will happen?

Kaulig Racing

Kaulig is in a similar, if not smaller, boat than Trackhouse; as part of that same cluster of ECR engine users, Kaulig has had a tough time establishing itself in the upper echelon of the NASCAR Cup Series.

However, much like Chip Ganassi Racing with Dodge in 2001, a change to Dodge could push Kaulig back to the forefront. The team took the 2024 season to rebuild and now has two decent prospects in the Xfinity Series in Christian Eckes and Daniel Dye.

While Dodge could be the missing piece for Kaulig, they have deep ties to Richard Childress Racing and ECR. In fact, Kaulig’s shop is on the RCR Campus in Welcome, North Carolina. Even if Dodge wanted Kaulig, it might be hard to pry them from their ties to Chevrolet.

Legacy Motor Club

The team, once known as Richard Petty Motorsports, has a history with Dodge dating back to its core. The team, now known as Legacy Motor Club, formed from several mergers of teams, including what once was the crown jewel of Dodge’s early days, Petty Enterprises.

While those days are long gone, LMC still finds itself jumping OEMsOEMs. When RPM first formed in 2009, the team ran Dodges before merging with Yates Racing and racing Fords until 2017, when they switched to Chevrolet. Following a rebranding and ownership change, the team now finds itself with Toyota. However, the team struggles to establish itself as a competitor in the Cup Series.

If the team still struggles to find footing with Toyota, perhaps one more jump could give the team the boost they need. However, as their switch to Toyota proved, a new OEM will not fix all the issues the team has. Maybe one day, they will have to face this choice once again.
