What’s Happening?

As the 2025 NASCAR season rolls into the summer months, many storylines get overlooked or outright forgotten. But one storyline fans are suddenly remembering is NASCAR legend Martin Truex Jr’s plans to race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, something that has yet to happen this season.

Truex’s 2025 Plans

When Martin Truex Jr. announced his retirement during the summer months of last season, it was quickly clear that this was a retirement from full-time action rather than an outright end of his career.

Racing Electronics Push Down

The rumor mill then turned its focus to the 2025 Daytona 500, wondering what team, Crew Chief, and car number the NASCAR legend would take with him to the Great American Race. This part of our story is resolved, as Truex, alongside a returning Cole Pearn, took on the 500 in TRICON Garage’s No. 56.

Yet, one stone remains unturned, and it revolves around comments made by Truex on Nov. 22. During media availability for the 2024 NASCAR Awards, Truex, when speaking about his 2025 plans beyond Daytona, said:

“I’m gonna do [the] Daytona 500, and then I’m looking forward to running some Xfinity cars a bit here and there. Just to have fun and see how it goes, and I really enjoy that style of car, low downforce, and just the older cars that we race. So, I look forward to doing a little bit of that again.” — Martin Truex Jr

The future Hall of Famer went on to say that he didn’t have any track in mind; rather, “I don’t even know where they’re going and not going.” Most fans at the time were excited about this news as it meant that a true fan-favorite driver was not leaving them entirely. However, Truex has not been seen since his lackluster 38th-place finish at Daytona.

What Happened:

Now that summer is here and we are quickly approaching the halfway point of all three National Series seasons, some fans are wondering what happened to this plan.

Most expected these races would be in the Toyota camp, most likely with one of Joe Gibbs Racing’s part-time entries or even Sam Hunt Racing’s two-car operation, which his brother, Ryan Truex, has ties to as well. But, there is no information about what happened to Truex’s plans.

However, there are a few cases to be made.

What Could Have Happened?

One theory is that these assumed open cars were quickly filled up by other part-time drivers and Cup Series regulars.

This year, JGR has only entered one full-time open car, the No. 19. So far, the car has already seen Aric Almirola, Chase Briscoe, Christopher Bell, Jack Perkins, Justin Bonsignore, Riley Herbst, and Ty Gibbs behind the wheel. Furthermore, SHR has had a rotating door of its own for its No. 24 entry, with four drivers behind the wheel, including plans for JGR’s own Christopher Bell to join in.

Truex could have been the one to back out of this part-time schedule and is simply enjoying his retirement. There is even a chance this race could still happen, and NASCAR fans, as always, are too impatient. The fact of the matter is that no one knows what happened, or could still happen with MTJ.
