One of the interesting things to watch during the Chicago Street Race was listening to broadcasters trying to pronounce Shane Van Gisbergen. Well, Trevsta93 put together a compilation of the broadcasters on NBC mispronouncing his name.

Now, as someone with broadcasting experience, I will defend these broadcasters. Broadcasting is a very difficult job because your mind is all over the place trying to keep track of a complicated event happening in front of you. When there is a new name on your spotter sheet you have not pronounced very much, it can be hard to think as quickly on your feet as you normally do when broadcasting.

Adding in a new name that you normally do not say interrupts your flow of speech, and it can cause you to second guess yourself. That is normal for broadcasters, and learning new names on a roster that has remained largely the same for the entire year is very difficult.

With that being said, you still have to find a way to learn how to accurately say the name. it seems that these broadcasters did find their way to say the name correctly, but the occasional mistake is not uncommon even if it’s not ideal. Trust me, these broadcasters probably listen back to this, and do not like listening to this.

It does not make this any less funny to listen back to. It is funny to hear these unique pronunciations, but this truly is a lot harder than it seems.

In the Stands

I think Jeff Burton is just fine MikeThe_Legend

Maybe a little harsh from Dean Neal

It truly is harder than it looks Evan Brown, but yes they need to work on getting it right.

Look, saying Shane Van Gisbergen’s name wrong is definitely not the best look, but broadcasting really is a difficult job. Even something as simple as saying an unfamiliar name right can be more difficult than it looks. It does not make this video any less funny.
