What’s Happening?

Multiple individuals have been arrested after allegedly breaking into Speedway Motorsports’ 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Kentucky.

  • Reports claim that over 30 individuals have been arrested for allegedly entering the track without permission, some of whom may have been inspired by a YouTube video exploring the track. This video, shot in the “abandoned places” style and featuring the uploader exploring different areas of the track, spread through the online NASCAR community when it was posted.
  • According to Brian Hamrick of WLWT5 News, local County Sheriff Bud Webster said that after the original group filmed and posted their video, “it’s been one group after another” entering the track. Webster also clarified that the track is not abandoned, something that the NASCAR community pointed out when the video first circulated.
  • Kentucky Speedway is one of the many 1.5-mile intermediate race tracks that were removed from the NASCAR schedule in the early 2020s. While it is unlikely to return to NASCAR action any time soon, much like other former race facilities, its owner, Speedway Motorsports, has found other uses for the venue.
  • Due to poor attendance and racing quality, the track has not hosted a NASCAR race since 2020. However, in 2011, it seemed like a saving grace for the fan base when it became the first track added to the Cup Series schedule since the 2001 season.
  • In a recent interview with Kevin Harvick on the Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast, Speedway Motorsports CEO Marcus Smith said that reviving the track was possible. However, there seems to be no movement in that direction.
