Tom Cruise, according to a new report, recently met with officials at Paramount Skydance Corporation to discuss a couple of film sequels, including the 1990 film “Days of Thunder.”
With the release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and the subsequent release of Brad Pitt’s realism-centric racing film F1 earlier this year, NASCAR fans and industry members have clamored for a sequel to the 1990 NASCAR-based film Days of Thunder.
Though the film is somewhat overlooked, NASCAR fans appreciate the realism that Days of Thunder brought to the sport compared to prior and even some more recent films.
With the realism seen in F1, support for a return of Days of Thunder has only increased. Among those interested in a sequel is the star of the original movie, Tom Cruise.
Though he has campaigned for a return to the Days of Thunder universe, there have only been rumors and speculation about the possibility of a sequel.
However, according to a new report from Tatiana Siegel, Brent Lang, and Matt Donnelly of Variety, Paramount Skydance is “working on” a sequel to Days of Thunder. Furthermore, the report claims that Cruise recently met with officials to “discuss a return” to Days of Thunder, among other franchises.
This is good news for fans of the film, but, as of press time, there is no confirmation that a sequel to Days of Thunder is in full production, nor is there a clear timeline for its development. However, if the first film was any indication, NASCAR fans will likely know when/if the production is underway.
During the filming of the original Days of Thunder, NASCAR granted studios unprecedented access to the series, including cars built and raced specifically for filming. While NASCAR would likely not permit this level of invasiveness again, similar to its counterpart, F1, some at-race filming could occur should the studio greenlight a sequel.
