What’s Happening?
One of the more intriguing storylines in motorsports right now blends the worlds of racing and Hollywood, as rumors continue to grow about a potential sequel or reboot of the 1990 film Days of Thunder. So, with a return to the DOT universe on the minds of many race fans, here is everything that has unfolded in the rumor mill so far.
What is Days of Thunder?
Released in 1990, the original film starred Tom Cruise as the fictional NASCAR driver Cole Trickle and became a cult classic among racing fans. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and backed by Paramount Pictures, the movie blended real NASCAR elements with Hollywood storytelling.
For the most part, the film is praised for its visuals and in-depth development, with NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports in particular playing a major role in the film’s production. The most notable aspect of this collaborative effort came from HMS, which entered real race cars into real races to collect B-Roll for the film.
In recent years, both Cruise and Bruckheimer have openly discussed the possibility of a sequel. While no official announcement has been made, momentum has clearly picked up. NASCAR itself has acknowledged the idea, with leadership expressing interest in seeing the project come to life.

The most concrete sign yet of progress is that a Hollywood writer, identified by Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal as Will Staples, has been actively attending races and visiting team shops to develop the story.
Staples has reportedly been present at major events like the 2026 Daytona 500 and the 2025 Cup Series Championship race at Phoenix meeting with drivers and insiders to better understand the modern sport.

Other Talk and Notes
A More Serious Take Than Talladega Nights? (March 2026)
Current Cup Series standout Christopher Bell also weighed in on the sequel idea, suggesting it could have a stronger impact on the sport than Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
Bell explained that while the comedy was entertaining growing up, it may have shaped how casual fans view NASCAR. In contrast, he believes a more grounded and serious film, similar to Days of Thunder, could better showcase the sport’s true intensity and skill.
For the Joe Gibbs Racing ace, the key is exposure, but with the right tone. A well-made sequel, he suggested, could highlight just how competitive and technical NASCAR really is, rather than leaning into parody.
While nothing is official yet, things are clearly moving in the right direction, and for NASCAR fans, that’s reason enough to be excited about a possible return of Days of Thunder.
This article will be updated as more rumors about a potential Days of Thunder Sequel emerge.
