What’s Happening?

Heading into Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen, Shane van Gisbergen was the overwhelming odds-on favorite. And he lived up to expectations. In a masterful clinic, SVG went on to score his fifth career win and his 4th straight on a road course. This put him in a tie with NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver, Chase Elliott, for the most consecutive road course race wins in the NASCAR Cup Series. Together, they are behind only Jeff Gordon, who between 1997 and 2000 won 6 consecutive races on the road. But SVG shattered another record here today. With 4 wins on the year, Shane van Gisbergen became the winningest rookie in series history.

This surpasses the likes of Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart, both of which one three races respectively in their rookie campaigns. This is the most recent way that SVG has etched his name in the NASCAR history books.
