What’s Happening?
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has confirmed that Hyak Motorsports has fired long-time spotter Tab Boyd following NASCAR’s race in Mexico City. Though he did not cite an exact reason, Boyd was the center of controversial social media posts this past weekend.
On the Morning Drive on @SiriusXMNASCAR Radio this morning, @StenhouseJr confirmed that former spotter Tab Boyd has been let go by HYAK Motorsports. Prior to this confirmation from Stenhouse on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Boyd, who serves as a spotter in all three NASCAR National Series, was not listed on the roster sheet for Hyak Motorsports this weekend. Instead, Clayton Hughes, known for his work with Martin Truex Jr., has now taken over that role full-time.
While in Mexico City, Boyd posted his frustrations on X, saying in a now-deleted post:
“I’m ready to go home, screw this place, people can talk it up all they want….. can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched….in less than 5 minutes. Good area my ass….” — Tab Boyd via X
There was no official comment from the team at the time; Boyd has since taken down the post and his X account. There was also little context for what sparked these comments, though the most recent episode of Corey LaJoie’s podcast, Stacking Pennies, may have given fans clues.
During this episode, LaJoie, who did not name Boyd or any name, said:
“If you find some guy in the street saying that they can swap your dollars out for pesos on the sidewalk, [it’s] probably not the thing to do, and then you probably shouldn’t fire up Twitter and tweet about it.” – Corey LaJoie
As of press time, Boyd remains listed as the spotter for Ryan Ellis’ No. 71 and Luke Baldwin’s No. 66 for this weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series races at Pocono Raceway.
