What’s Happening?
We knew it was a possibility going it. The start-time of the 67th Daytona 500 was moved up an entire hour to avoid the chance of afternoon showers. Unfortunately for the fans, drivers, and industry insiders, mother nature’s wrath could not be avoided. It all started on Lap-8 when it started sprinkling in the turns. The field ran a couple of laps under caution before the red flag was displayed on Lap-11 and the field was brought down pit road. We remained hopeful for a time but after about a five-minute pause, the rain picked up and drivers were ordered to get out of their cars. Rain had officially delayed the Daytona 500 for the fourth time in six years.
- Per Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass, rain is expected to stop between 4:30 and 5 PM, est. At the time of this report, the rain cell extends 70 miles to both the east and west.
- As stated above, this is the 4th Daytona 500 to be affected by weather in 6 years. It’s starting to become a common-place thing, unfortunately. But with rain supposedly ceasing around 5, hopefully the track can be dried quickly and we can get this race in tonight rather than having to postpone it until tomorrow.
