What’s Happening?

The Daytona 500 is the pinnacle of the NASCAR season. Opening up the season with such an important event, NASCAR gives its fans one of the most packed race weekend schedules of the season. So, with a lot of racing coming up, here’s what you need to know about the weather.

  • NASCAR has raced the Daytona 500 since 1959. As the race with the highest paying points in the sport, combined with the difficulty of winning this one race, it is by far the most important single race date on the NASCAR calendar.
  • The weekend is more than just the Daytona 500, as there will be the “Duels”—two 150-mile qualifier races—on Thursday night. It will also include a Friday night Truck Series race, a Saturday afternoon ARCA Race, and a Saturday night Xfinity Series race.
  • The weather in Flordia is always changing, and it seems as if at least one Daytona race a year sees some form of weather delay.

Recent Weather Events at Daytona: The 2024 Daytona 500

Last season, thanks to a large rain shower in Daytona Beach, NASCAR shuffled the entire race weekend. This included a shift of both the Cup and Xfinity Series races to Monday, with the Cup Series beginning during the day and a very late-night Xfinity Series race.

Prior to this, the Daytona 500 had only been delayed twice in its entire history. The first time was in 2012 when Matt Kenseth won a memorable race, and the second was in 2020 when Denny Hamlin won dramatically with Ryan Newman flipping into Corey LaJoie.

Note: This article will be updated with a more accurate and detailed forecast as the race weekend nears.
