What’s Happening?
NASCAR heads out west yet again for their yearly stop at Sonoma Raceway This weekend’s races will only feature the Cup Series and Xfinity Series. Here’s everything you need to know about this weekend’s race at Sonoma Raceway.
- This track is a classic road course race in NASCAR, having been on the schedule since 1989. For the longest time, it was only one of two road courses on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.
- Having been on the NASCAR schedule for a while, many “regulars” in the field are a little more comfortable on the course, cutting into SVG’s advantage significantly. That said, SVG is still inarguably the best road course racer in NASCAR. He won the Xfinity race at the track last year and is looking to defend.
- This time around, the race weekend in Sonoma will be from July 11-13.

Top Storylines of the Weekend
- After sweeping the weekend last week in Chicago, all eyes are on Shane van Gisbergen. He seems to have been a solid investment on the part of the Trackhouse Racing team, having won two of the three road courses already this season. Heading into Sonoma, he’ll once again be running both the Xfinity Series (in the JRM No. 9) and the Cup Series races. For the second week in a row, he’ll be going for the weekend sweep.
- Spire has shown some serious speed in recent weeks with Michael McDowell leading every lap of the opening stage in Chicago before mechanical failures took him out of contention. He’ll be looking to rebound this weekend. He finished runner-up to Kyle Larson in this race one year ago.
