What’s Happening?
Following an incident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NASCAR has suspended NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Austin Hill for this weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway.
Update: 5:45 PM: In a post on X, RCR confirmed they will not appeal the suspension, and Austin Dillon will fill in for the No. 21 this weekend at Iowa Speedway.
- During Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Hill raced with Aric Almirola towards the front of the pack for position with ten to go. In turn three, Almirola moved the No. 21 to attempt a pass; to his credit, Hill was able to correct course in his loose race car and regain position.
- However, after his save, Hill, who was notably wearing white driver’s gloves, seemingly swerved into the right rear of the No. 19, sending Almirola nose-first into a non-safer barrier portion of the turn four outside retaining wall. Following the incident, the No. 21 was penalized five laps, ultimately finishing 34th.
- NASCAR fans revolted almost immediately after the wreck, saying that NASCAR should’ve parked the No. 21 and its 31-year-old driver for the rest of the day. This was not the first time fans and industry members called out Hill for his aggressive driving, and most expected a suspension, which has now come to fruition with NASCAR’s ruling Tuesday afternoon.
- Most importantly, Hill will be stripped of his earned playoff points due to his impending absence from this weekend‘s race at Iowa Speedway. Before this weekend, Hill, with his three wins, sat fifth in points and third in the playoff picture. While he is still automatically qualified, he will lose all playoff points earned prior to the playoffs.
- At press time, Richard Childers Racing did not release a statement on whether they will appeal or who will be a substitute driver for Hill this next weekend. This is a developing story, and this article will be updated as more information comes to light.
