What’s Happening?

After the tragic passing of Denny Hamlin’s father Dennis following a Sunday night house fire, the NASCAR family is showing an outpouring of support for the Hamlin family.

NASCAR

In the aftermath of Hamlin’s passing, NASCAR released a statement reflecting on the sacrifices Hamlin made to help make Denny one of the best drivers in the sport.

Industry Members

Many industry members, both competitors and observers of the sport, also reached out expressing their sympathies for the family. One notable name that posted about the passing of Dennis is FOX Sports Analyst and legendary Crew Chief Larry McReynolds, who has had back and forth with Denny in the past regarding his recent lawsuit with NASCAR.

The passing of Dennis also followed a tragic plane crash on December 18 that took the lives of seven people, including NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, his wife, and two kids. The close nature of the tragedies has resulted in one of the most emotionally trying months for the NASCAR community.

Many members of pit road, including veteran Crew Chiefs, spotters, and even owners, also posted heartfelt messages to the family.

Drivers

Though NASCAR is one of the most heated sports in the world, its competitors treat each other as a traveling family. Since this tragic fire, many of Denny Hamlin’s on-track rivals, such as Kyle Larson, and several who have rarely, if ever, raced against Hamlin, like those in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, have shared their feeling during this tragic time.

NASCAR alums have also stepped in to remember Hamlin, with drivers from all generations, like Rick Mast, Mark Martin, and Jeremy Mayfield, all posting on social media. In one post, Truck Series Champion and FOX Sports analyst Todd Bodine reflected on meeting the Hamlin family.

Fans

The love for the Hamlin’s has not stopped with those who may have known them in the community, with fans stepping in to pay their respects as well. Many have remembered the sacrifices that Dennis made to make Denny one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, with Harper Lucas sharing a clip of legendary driver and broadcaster Benny Parsons sharing how Hamlin finally worked his way into a full-time late model ride.

Many NASCAR fans are finding other ways to memorialize Dennis, such as donating to the Denny Hamlin Foundation, which helps donate money to organizations in children’s health, such as the Children’s Hospital of Richmond and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, for research and awareness for health issues like Cystic Fibrosis. A post on the r/NASCAR subreddit encouraging fans to donate to the foundation is currently one of the most upvoted posts on the page.
