What’s Happening?
During the latest episode of Julian Edelman’s Games with Names podcast, 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson shared his eagerness to be in a potential sequel to the 1990s film Days of Thunder.
Though there is no official word of a sequel yet, NASCAR fans are clamoring for a sequel to Jerry Bruckheimer’s 1990 NASCAR film, Days of Thunder.
During a guest appearance on former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman’s Games with Names podcast, Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson was asked if he would be interested in a guest cameo if a sequel to Days of Thunder were made. The former Cup Series champion quickly responded to Edelman, saying, “I would absolutely be in it. I would like to be in it.”
Days of Thunder is not known for story related cameos from real drivers when compared to other NASCAR based films like Stroker Ace or Talladega Nights, but the movie’s production had deep ties to Larson’s team, Hendrick Motorsports.
When asked if he would be willing to play the “bad guy,” Larson responded, “I don’t know, I don’t feel like I’m the bad guy yet in real racing. So I don’t think I could be the bad guy.”
Yet, Larson was quick to suggest that the current ‘Heel’ of NASCAR is Denny Hamlin, who he claims, “He plays it up so great,” and “he’s with a good team, so he can back it up, too.”
The 32-year-old even went as far as to compare racing for Hendrick to being the New England Patriots, the team Edelman made his name with in the NFL, of NASCAR. “I feel like we’re kind of like the Patriots…. like, there’s just never any drama,” Larson said.
Days of Thunder 2?
There is speculation and rumors about a sequel to the original Days of Thunder; nothing is set in stone just yet. But an ever-growing portion of the NASCAR fanbase is calling for a sequel or, at the very least, a film with the same serious tone as Days of Thunder.
The film, starring Tom Cruise as as Cup Series driver Cole Trickle, is often commended by NASCAR fans for its real and gritty representation of NASCAR. With the release of F1, starring Brad Pitt and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Cruise and his long-time friend and Vice Chairman of HMS, Jeff Gordon, have expressed their interest in reviving the franchise.
