What’s Happening?
Group Vice President and President of Toyota Racing Development David Wilson announced on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio that Jimmie Johnson will be driving next year when Legacy Motor Club moves to Toyota. While Wilson did not mention specific races, he expressed excitement at the prospect of a Seven-Time Cup Series Champion driving a Toyota.
You Need to Know:
- Jimmie Johnson has run Chevrolet in literally every NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, Truck, and ASA Race he ever ran. Even in his runs in other series, he has generally stayed loyal to GM running Pontiac in IROC and the NASCAR Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and running Cadillac in his IMSA starts. IndyCar was Johnson’s only exception as he ran Honda in IndyCar for Chip Ganassi.
- This comes amidst Legacy Motor Club’s move to Toyota which was announced back in May. An unsurprising move given the team’s performance, but a significant move given that Toyota goes from six chartered entries (Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing) to eight.
- Fans are intrigued and excited about this move. Johnson has been exclusively Chevy during most of his motorsports career, and seeing him with a new manufacturer is interesting.
