During a recent episode of his podcast, Seven-Time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson professed an optimistic outlook that he will race on NASCAR’s newest street circuit in 2026.
With the NASCAR Cup Series impending return to Southern California, there is a lot of talk about what part-timers could race on the streets of Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. Among these is So Cal Native Jimmie Johnson, who opened up about racing at the street circuit during the most recent episode of his podcast Never Settle.
Johnson sounded optimistic about racing in San Diego when his co-host, Marty Smith, asked him if he would try to make the race. Johnson predicted, “Try 100%. That I end up there? 99.9% chance.”
Since 2023, the 49-year-old has made sporadic starts with his team, Legacy Motor Club, in their No. 84 entry. However, these starts have not gone well, with Johnson scoring an average finish of 29.9 in these 14 starts. Nonetheless, things have been better this year, as Johnson finished third in the Daytona 500 after avoiding the last-lap ‘big one’.
While he is not scheduled to race the rest of this season, Johnson has been open about his potential to race in 2026, telling Kevin Harvick on the August 22 episode of Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour that during a race last season, he felt he should be in the sponsor suite rather than on the track.
But, when NASCAR announced the race in San Diego on July 23, Johnson expressed interest in competing in the event and even said, “I want to keep going. I want to stay in a car.”
Johnson said on his podcast that the only thing holding him back from racing at San Diego is ‘selling’ the race, and though he sounds optimistic, his team will find a sponsor, saying, “I think we’ll sell it.”
All three NASCAR National Series are set to race on the streets of San Diego the weekend of June 19-21, 2026. It will be the first NASCAR race in Southern California since 2024, and the first points race since 2023.
