What’s Happening?
Just four races into a contract season with Richard Childress Racing, Kyle Busch and his No. 8 team aren’t off to the hottest start, raising questions in the NASCAR fan base about whether or not the future Hall of Famer’s 2026 season was doomed from the start.

Someone on the radio is frustrated with the driver:
"All we had to do was limp to the freaking caution. I'm trying to get him to conserve, take care of it, there's only so…
Last season felt like a make-or-break year for Kyle Busch and Richard Childress Racing, as after a disappointing 2024 campaign, the team and driver looked to improve on a contract year.
But, despite their middling performance, the rumored Busch free agency never came to pass, with the future Hall of Famer reupping on another one-year deal for 2026.
To revitalize the team after the departure of Randall Burnett, RCR brought on Crew Chief Jim Pohlman, a former NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion with Justin Allgaier and JR Motorsports.
But, even with these changes, vibes in the No. 8 camp remained mostly the same as they were last season, with Busch on a one-year deal, with a chance to right the wrongs of past seasons with a new crew chief.
Unfortunately, much like 2025, things aren’t off to the best of starts.
2026 So Far
For Busch, success this season did not take shape in the pursuit of a championship. Instead, the NASCAR fan base feels that this year is a chance for the team to get back on track, win some races, and make the Chase.
But through four races, it seems like, even with the addition of Pohlman, the No. 8 team is picking up where it left off in 2025.
After sitting on the pole for the Daytona 500, the No. 8 would finish 15th, with Busch backing off late in the race and avoiding two major last-lap crashes.
From there, a lap 126 crash at EchoPark Speedway ended the No. 8’s second race of the season in 34th. The team then followed this up with a 12th-place finish at one of Busch’s best tracks of the Next Gen Era, Circuit of the Americas in Austin.
This past weekend at Phoenix Raceway, it looked like it would be the most frustrating outing of the 2026 season, with the team suffering two blown tires, with Busch still managing to bring the No. 8 home on the lead lap in 16th.
Man Kyle Busch was slow AND abusing the tires. What an absolute whiff by the No. 8 team this weekend.

While this was a rebound from a very difficult start to the day, the talk of the town regarding Busch’s team was not his recovery skills, but rather, his team radio, where fans and media members clipped the barbs shared between members of the No. 8 team.

With one of the most chaotic stretches of the schedule behind them, Busch and company sit 20th in points, not so bad when compared to some of 2025’s playoff drivers.
Still, some are already asking if his situation at RCR, as it is right now, has already set the 2026 season up to be a lame duck year for Busch at RCR ahead of what is rumored to be a wild NASCAR free agency cycle.
Every NASCAR Cup Series Driver’s Current Contract Status in 2025
What’s Happening? Like any other sport, Free Agency is a key part of NASCAR. However, driver-free agency is not covered like…
What Does a “Lame Duck” Season Look Like in NASCAR?
The term lame duck is often used in politics, but it can also be used in sports when an athlete finds themselves powerless due to their given situation at their current team, such as their contractual status.
Of course, with any driver on a contract season, the idea of being a lame duck will always come to the minds of fans, as, while the driver tries to regroup for the final year of their contract, the team they are racing for could already be making plans for the coming year.
This becomes all the more difficult for the driver when there is a clear replacement in mind. For reference, take a look at Daniel Suarez’s 2025 contract season at Trackhouse Racing.
With Connor Zilisch waiting and winning in the wings for Trackhouse, Suarez and company put together their worst season of the NASCAR Next Gen era, all leading up to the veteran’s eventual move to Spire Motorsports.
Is Busch Set Up for a Lame Duck Season?
Much like Suarez, Busch isn’t off to the hottest of starts in his contract year, and, sitting below him in the RCR food chain is another up-and-coming star in Jesse Love.
If Love were to outperform his 2025 championship campaign, who’s to say that Busch won’t feel that same level of pressure that Suarez felt at Trackhouse in 2025?
On the bright side, as far as Busch’s end of this story goes, there are plenty of rumors as to where he could end up in this free agent cycle, which means that everyone in this scenario could land on their feet if a breakup is imminent.
This is the exact question many fans are asking after Phoenix, as, if their cold start to the year continues, some theorize RCR and Busch could consciously or even subconsciously begin the process of setting up for this new era in their respective histories before the season even comes to a close.

No disrespect to Cleetus. I hope KFB leaves RCR after this year lmao
Though no one can predict the future, one aspect of this could be true, as, if there is even an inkling of a change in the tide at RCR, the signs of a future split-up would likely show on the race track before any news got out there.
Nonetheless, if the NASCAR fan base can learn anything from last season, while this seems like one of the biggest stories of 2026, it could come to a quick end just as it did in 2025, either with a new contract or a trip to victory lane.
