What’s Happening?

For the third consecutive year, the best drivers in the world head to the Windy City to tackle the streets of Chicago. First up: the NASCAR Xfinity Series. For this year’s race, we got beautiful weather. But it was a hot one out in Chicago, with the temperature pushing 90 degrees. The Xfinity Series always puts on a thrilling show in Chicago and today’s race was no different.

So, without further ado, here’s everything that went down in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Chicago Street Course!

Fast Notes:
  • Shane van Gisbergen, road course ace and defending winner of this race, started from the pole in the JRM number 9 car. The number 9 car won a few weeks ago in Chicago with SVG’s Trackhouse teammate Daniel Suarez. SVG was hoping today to continue that dominance.
  • Surprisingly, rolling off 2nd was RCR driver, Austin Hill. Hill had a tough go of it last week at one of his best tracks, Atlanta Motor Speedway. He was looking to rebound today and just have a quiet, uneventful race.
  • There was another Aussie in today’s race. Jack Perkins started today’s race, driving the JGR All-Star car, the number 19. He rolled off in 5th but had issues early. He fell four laps off the pace in 34th.

Shane van Gisbergen Defends in the Windy City

As we got inside 15 laps to go, Connor Zilisch finally took the lead. Slowly, SVG started to work his way back up through the field. With 8 laps to go, SVG was able to slip into 2nd with his eyes dead set on Zilisch. Meanwhile, Zilisch was told that he needed to save fuel. With 6 to go, the worst for Zilisch happened. Andre Castro plowed into the tire barrier, triggering a late-race caution. This stacked the field back up, putting Zilisch and SVG on equal footing.

During the caution, points leader Justin Allgaier came down pit road. Prior to the caution, he reported brake issues. On pit road, the team went to address the issue so that he could nurse the car home to the finish. The damage to the tire barrier ended up being significant. The caution was a lengthy one, and the laps wound down. This put us over the line into NASCAR overtime.

The race restarted with SVG beside Zilisch. Going into turn 1, SVG crowded the 88 into the wall and was through to the lead. The 9 car started to gap the rest of the field but it wasn’t over yet. Zilisch powered back from 2nd. Another mistake, though, and SVG was off and away to victory. Shane van Gisbergen successfully defended his win from the year before.

SVG Leads the Way in Stage 1

The first stage went off as expected. From the pole, Shane van Gisbergen led the entirety of the opening stage. The stage ended prematurely when Brad Perez, in the number 45 Chevrolet, got into the tire barrier. SVG went on to win the stage, though he was ineligible to receive any points. One driver to note was Connor Zilisch, who had to start at the rear of the field after making unapproved adjustments on his number 88 Redbull car. He was able to work his way up to the 8th position, collecting 3 points.

Creed Takes the Second Stage

SVG continued to lead to start the second stage with a brief challenge from Jeb Burton who didn’t pit during the stage break. However, he radioed into his crew a few laps later, reporting engine issues. This cycled Sheldon Creed to the lead as the 9 car came down pit road. Of everyone in the race, Creed seemed to be the only driver to have anything for SVG as he was able to stay with him in the first stage. The 9 car pitted for adjustments, and the team was able to resolve the issue. Sheldon Creed led the remainder of the stage, collecting the stage win as well as 1 Playoff point.

SVG Clocks the Fastest Lap

Late in the running of this race, while chasing down JRM teammate Connor Zilisch, Shane van Gisbergen clocked the Xfinity Fastest Lap of the race at 90.95 seconds. However, since SVG is ineligible to collect points in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, no Xfinity Fastest Lap point was awarded.

Lionel Racing Reveals First Wave of 2026 NASCAR Authentics Diecast

What’s Happening?

Lionel Racing finally confirmed the first wave of 2026 NASCAR Authentics 1:64 scale diecast for Monday morning, with the line of retail-exclusive diecast featuring a new look for the new year.

  • This line will include six throwback paint schemes from NASCAR’s 2025 throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway. Though they did not release one in 2025, this move restarts an annual tradition of Lionel releasing at least one wave of cars carrying the colors of that prior season’s throwback designs.
  • Included in this wave of cars are Austin Cindric, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, William Byron, and Sammy Smith. Alongside these paint schemes’ debuts in the Authentics line is a new design for the packaging of the 2026 line of NASCAR Authentics.
  • Last season was somewhat turbulent for Lionel as, alongside issues with tariffs, the brand only released three waves of NASCAR Autentics, one wave of NASCAR Autentics Winners Circle diecast, and two waves of Haulers.
  • Lionel announcing the first wave of 2026 early on in the new year is perhaps a sign that 2026 could return this line to its regular release schedule. The post from Lionel Racing also confirmed that the brand will announce another wave by the end of the week, further hinting at a recommitment to the Authentics line.

Chase Pistone, NASCAR Trucks and Nationwide Series Driver, Passes Away

What’s Happening?

Chase Pistone, a former competitor on the short track racing circuit in addition to NASCAR’s National Series, has passed away. Pistone, now a successful Legends Car owner, was 42.

  • Chase’s brothers Nick and Tom Pistone confirmed the North Carolina natives’ passing to LegendsNation.com. The cause of Pistone’s passing is unknown. The family asked that media share the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number, which is 988.
  • Pistone, the grandson of NASCAR legend “Tiger” Tom Pistone, made his way to NASCAR after competing on short tracks in Legends cars and Late Models. He would make his jump to NASCAR via the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2005, racing for Green Light Racing at Martinsville Speedway.
  • Pistone would continue his NASCAR pursuits in 2006, racing in ARCA and the NASCAR Busch Series. Unfortunately, these two starts, at Martinsville with the Busch Series and Iowa with ARCA, would be his last for nearly a decade.
  • Pistone returned to NASCAR in 2014, racing in a combined eight NASCAR Camping World Truck and Nationwide Series races. During this season, his final in NASCAR, the then 30-year-old scored his best National Series finish, ninth place in the Truck Series annual trip to Gateway.

8 Takeaways From NASCAR At COTA

Three races in, the 2026 season is finally starting to show its hand. COTA shifted narratives, exposed weaknesses, and raised new questions about contenders, pretenders, and everything in between.

  • Has Shane van Gisbergen officially been proven mortal after getting outraced late at Circuit of the Americas?
  • Is 19-year-old Connor Zilisch already ahead of schedule after slicing through the field multiple times?
  • With three straight wins, is Tyler Reddick basically a lock for the postseason this early?
  • And how concerned should the 48 team be after a rough weekend for Alex Bowman?

From substitute drivers being forced into action to points gaps growing faster than expected, COTA delivered more than just a road course chess match. There were momentum swings, reputation hits, and at least one young driver stacking up enemies before stacking up results.
