What’s Happening?

Late Wednesday afternoon, Denny Hamlin and Fox Sports’ Larry McReynolds had a heated back-and-forth. This is not the first time that Hamlin has found himself in an argument on X this year. Here’s what happened.

The Play-by-Play

Like so many others, Denny Hamlin pitched his Playoff idea on Actions Detrimental as part of the ongoing NASCAR community discussion over the NASCAR Playoffs. While it wasn’t the most beloved playoff concept, some fans thought his pitch was worth discussing.

One of these people included former Crew Chief and personality for Fox Sports and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Larry McReynolds. Larry’s response was full of sarcasm and pointed out his disinterest in seeing a winless driver walk away without the championship.

Hamlin responded with a similar yet slightly more aggressive tone, reminding McReynolds of Matt Crafton’s winless 2019 championship. Hamlin then dropped a “bomb” by posting that he would like McReynolds to “stop spreading disinformation” about 23XI’s ongoing lawsuit with NASCAR.

Backstory

Since the Oct. 2 lawsuit, in which 23XI Racing, co-owned by Hamlin and Michael Jordan, sued NASCAR on antitrust grounds, McReynolds was one of the first NASCAR media personalities to take a side. In fact, on the morning of Oct. 2, McReynolds claimed that 23XI, as a relatively new team to NASCAR, had no right to try changing the sport.

While both sides have kept their temper about the lawsuit in public, Hamlin let this tension boil over yesterday as he feels alleged ongoing disinformation from McReynolds is hurting the team’s case in the court of public opinion. In fact, looking back to the early days of the lawsuit, Hamlin has addressed Channel 90 and their coverage of the lawsuit, starting with an Oct. 2 interview with the team’s lawyer, Jeffery Kessler.

The following day, Kessler’s interview with veteran broadcaster Dave Moody was missing from the channel’s archive. However, it mysteriously reappeared soon after fans noticed; Hamlin felt this was due to Kessler’s “fact after fact” approach.

Earlier this year, Hamlin found himself in an online argument with Speedway Motorsports’ CEO Marcus Smith. However, Hamlin has patched things up with Smith following this exchange. As far as the back-and-forth with McReynolds goes, Hamlin seems as unapologetic as ever.
